Oman, one wadi at a time.
Which canyon pools you can actually swim. Whether the dune camp repays a three hour drive. What a fjord morning out of Khasab costs. Every tour in the country, reviewed.
Muscat is not Salalah, and Musandam is neither.
The capital and the coast either side of it, the monsoon south, the fjords cut off in the far north, the fort towns of the interior and the sand sea east of them. Five bases, five very different weeks.
A wadi is why most people fly to Oman.
Wadi Shab wants a boat across the mouth, forty five minutes of scrambling and a swim through a slot in the rock before the waterfall appears. Wadi Bani Khalid is the gentle one, deep pools a short walk from the car park. Wadi Tiwi is narrow, green and mostly empty. Driving time and walking distance are what actually separate them.

Sleep in the Wahiba Sands, not on the edge of them.
The camps sit two to three hours inland from the capital, so a day trip spends most of itself on the road. What you are paying for is the moment the tyres come down for the sand, the ridge at sunset and the hour after sunrise before the heat arrives. Stay the night.
Khasab is a long way from everywhere and still worth the trip.
The Musandam peninsula is cut off from the rest of Oman by the UAE, so almost everyone arrives from Dubai or flies. Limestone drops straight into the Strait of Hormuz, dolphins run alongside the dhows on the way out to Telegraph Island, and the water in Khor Sham is the flattest in the country.

What a day out in Oman actually costs.
Every tour on the site grouped by price. A wadi morning and a private 4x4 day sit at opposite ends of the same list.
Muscat mornings, souq walks, the sinkhole stop and short runs along the Corniche.
The full day standards: Wadi Shab, Nizwa and Bahla, a Musandam dhow, a snorkel morning off the Daymaniyats.
Three things Oman has that its neighbours do not.
The Gulf sells dune dinners and indoor ski slopes everywhere. The drowned fjords, the fort circuit and the edge of the Rub al Khali are Omani and nowhere else.

Khor Sham
The Musandam coast was pushed under water by the plates grinding together at the mouth of the Gulf, so the valleys are drowned and the ridges are islands. Wooden dhows run the inlets at walking pace with cushions on the deck and lunch below. Telegraph Island, halfway up Khor Sham, held a British cable relay station for four years in the 1860s and has been abandoned ever since.

The Fort Circuit
Oman counts its forts in the hundreds and the best of them sit within an hour of Nizwa. Bahla is the enormous one, walls of sun dried brick that took decades to stabilise. Jabrin is the decorated one, painted ceilings above the date store. Nizwa keeps the round tower over its souq, and the livestock market beside it runs on Friday mornings only, finished by nine.

The Rub al Khali
Drive north out of Salalah and the gravel plain runs for an hour before the first dunes stand up. This is the southern shoulder of the Rub al Khali, the largest continuous sand desert on earth, and the Omani side is the empty part. Most trips are late afternoon runs timed for the light, and the good ones carry their own water and stay out for the stars.

From May to September, Oman sends you to water or to altitude.
Muscat is past 40 degrees by mid morning in high summer and the coast holds the humidity all night. Two answers still work. Wadi pools are shaded canyon water and stay cold whatever the road is doing, and the drive up Jebel Akhdar loses ten degrees before you reach the plateau. Both are day trips from the capital.
Salalah turns green while the rest of Arabia bakes.
The Indian Ocean monsoon clips the Dhofar coast from late June to early September and the bare limestone above Salalah goes the colour of a Welsh hillside. Waterfalls run at Wadi Darbat, the camels move up onto the escarpment, and it drizzles. Gulf families book it out months ahead, so the tours and the flights both go early.
